싱어 송라이터였던 부모를 따라 레스토랑이나 호텔의 무대에서 노래하기 시작한 6살 이래로 주얼은 늘 공연과 함께 살아왔다. 그녀의 목소리는 오로라처럼 빛났으며 팝 음악계에 알래스카의 산소 같은 신선함을 공급해줬다. 무명가수로 커피 하우스를 떠돌며 힘들게 노래를 부르던 때나 펴낸 시집이 베스트 셀러가 되고 다이아몬드 앨범의 주인공이 된 지금이나 주얼은 여전히 카우보이 모자에 통기타를 멘 소박한 모습이다. 또한 그녀의 노래는 변함없이 편안하고 희망적이고 정신적이다. 주얼의 진정성은 그렇게 계속되고 있다.
17살에 곡 쓰기를 시작한 이후 싱어송라이터로 벌써 11년이 되었다. 20살에 낸 데뷔 앨범은 뒤늦게 진가를 발휘하더니 현재까지 1천1백만 장이 팔려나갔다. 1998년에 발간한 시집 [A Night Without Armor]는 뉴욕 타임즈의 베스트셀러 리스트에 오르기도 하며 수십만 부가 판매되었다. 같은 해 발표한 2집 앨범을 통해서는 희망과 훈훈한 인간애를 전하기도 했다. 이듬해에는 남북전쟁을 소재로 한 리안 감독의 영화 [Ride With The Devil]에 여주인공으로 출연, 배우로도 호평을 받았다.
